About Termika

Termika is a free paragliding forecast tool covering 12,333 flying sites across the Americas and Europe. It was built by a paragliding pilot who got tired of checking five different weather apps before every flight.

How the thermal score works

Every site gets a composite score from 0 to 100, updated daily. The score combines six key factors that determine whether a day is good for cross-country (XC) flying:

• Thermal density — how many thermal hotspots exist near the site
• Wind speed and direction — light, launchable wind vs dangerous gusts
• Cloud base height — higher base = more vertical development
• CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) — thermal energy in the atmosphere
• Lifted Index — atmospheric instability indicator
• Precipitation probability — rain kills thermals

A score above 70 means excellent XC conditions. 50–70 is good for local soaring. Below 50 is marginal — stay on the ground or expect short flights.

Termika aggregates data from trusted open sources:

• Open-Meteo — weather forecasts (open data)
• ParaglidingEarth — site database (CC-BY-4.0)
• thermal.kk7.ch — thermal hotspot maps (CC-BY-NC-SA)
• OpenStreetMap — map tiles

Termika is a decision aid, not flight clearance. Forecasts are model-based estimates that can be wrong. Always check conditions on the ground before launching, consult local pilots, and never fly beyond your skill level.
